See my comments on the mailing list, but to be brief:
I'd suggest adding back in the "did you know..." section, and the browse thingy. This wiki is for more than help with problems, its also about improving your skills! Below the two boxes you have is an okay place for this content though.
The "using vim to edit tips" link from the current home page is very useful, but can be linked from some "getting started" page or something.
I think we need to have at least a link to the featured tip page, since the whole point of it is to highlight some clever tip on the main page.

So, here's a thought. How about, rather than a whole new page, we add a "Where to get help" box at the top of the current main page. We could then get rid of the "from Vim help" section (which can be merged, or made part of an FAQ linked from this new "where to get help" section). It seems we have a lot of good stuff on the current main page, and I'd hate to see it shuffled off to somewhere nobody can find it.
