Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome, welkomEdit

Welcome to the Vim tips wiki! We hope you can make continuing contributions of articles and/or discussion and other improvements.

If you are new to Wikia or wikis in general, be sure to visit the "Community portal" for an outline of some of the main parts of the site and a link to pages that tell you how to edit.

Do keep an eye on the "recent changes" page, where all edits and their authors (anonymous or signed-in) are listed. Bookmark it, maybe. (And help delete spam - unpleasant but a fact of life.)

If you want to get involved, check out Project:Policy and if you like, join the mailing list.

Tip titlesEdit

Hi Richard - thanks for joining in. That's a nice swap file tip you created. I hope you won't mind receiving a couple of suggestions (notice that we are avoiding using the talk pages on a tip because we have a lot of fixing to do, and we want to minimise the number of places to look).

It's not clear what the best policy for tip titles is. See our current views at Title guidelines.

While your title is good, when you look at it as a URL you can see that simplifying titles, and omitting punctuation, would have benefits when posting links to tips:

I'm not recommending that you change the title - I'm just mentioning the guidelines for the future.

If you would like to read a few more of the guidelines, particularly the Template guidelines, you will see our preferred way of referring to :help. If you try that, please use the Show preview button and test the help links in the preview window (see if they open the correct help page - I would do a Ctrl-Click to open the link in a new tab so I don't lose the page I am editing).

It's a bit unfortunate that you made a tip "Learn to do it by hand!" on the same day that someone thought that "Sex" would be a good joke tip on the :sex command. I agree with your point in do it by hand, although in general I would prefer rather more substantial tips. It wouldn't be very helpful if we got lots of personal points-of-view expressed as separate tips, somewhat like a forum.

I hope you won't regard my comments as any sort of criticism - I'm very glad you're here.
